Social Emotional Learning
"All learning has an emotional base."
-Plato
Hallie Wells is a relationships-first school, meaning that before anything else, we strive to make sure our students feel loved and cared for. Once this building block is in place, we provide students with ample opportunities to develop and strengthen essential "soft skills" that will positively impact them throughout their lives.
We provide a deep focus on Restorative Justice to build relationships, teach communication skills, social awareness, and responsible decision making. Staff will be implementing new social emotional lessons centered around conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and diversity/acceptance. Finally, HWMS uses Mindfulness practices to encourage self-awareness.

HWMS is excited to be one of the first middle schools in MCPS to partner with Our Minds Matter. "The Our Minds Matter program is a student-led club model in which teens are trained and empowered to promote school-wide social connectedness, to encourage help-seeking behavior and to develop coping skills via youth-led activities." Interested students should make sure they sign up for the Mustang Minds Matter Club when they select their first Empower Hours.

Our school uses SOS Signs of Suicide , a suicide prevention program that educates students about the relationship between suicide and depression. We encourage all students to seek help from trusted adults whether they have concerns about themselves or a friend using the ACT® message.

MCPS implements Personal Body Safety Lessons (PBSLs) with grade-level, age appropriate content for students in every grade from Pre-K to 12. In middle school, students will be able to:
- define types of abuse
- understand and recognize the signs of abuse
- understand the impact of abuse
- identify support people and community resources
- describe what a victim of abuse or family member can do to report abuse or to seek help
